Could you be the next Caretaker / Cleaner for the Parish of St Peter’s, Halliwell in Bolton? We are looking for someone who is adaptable, self-motivated, conscientious and enthusiastic to join our small team. The successful applicant will work at both St. Peter’s Parish Centre and St. Peter’s Church on Church Road, Bolton. They will be responsible, well organised and able to prioritise tasks plus also able to cope with the physical demands of the job. Proven cleaning and general maintenance experience is essential together with a good awareness of health and safety requirements. They will have a friendly, welcoming and pleasant manner and be sympathetic with the Christian ethos of St. Peter’s Parish. This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week, typically weekdays 8am-4pm (with 30 mins unpaid lunchbreak), all year round. St Peter’s Halliwell is a large, vibrant, evangelical Anglican parish on the edge of Bolton.

Our vicar, Revd Alan Saunders, joined us in September 2022 and leads an enthusiastic parish with a large staff team, active and gifted lay leadership and a wide variety of well-established ministries and mission to our community.
Overall Objectives of the Role
- Ensuring that St Peter’s Church and Parish Centre facilities are maintained to excellent standards of cleanliness and operation
- Overseeing the daily use of the Parish Centre, including evenings and weekends when necessary
- Facilitating the use of St Peter’s Church and Parish Centre by different user groups
- General maintenance and repairs
- Acting as a key point of contact for all visitors and users of the Parish Centre
Duties and Responsibilities
- Opening and closing of the Parish Centre at times determined by the Parish Business Manager
- Acting as a nominated Parish Centre key holder for the Alarm Monitoring Company
- Carrying out daily security and safety checks, to include the fire and intruder alarm systems
- Checking fire-fighting equipment, testing fire alarm sounders weekly and assisting with fire drills
- Report breakages/faults/repairs
- Carry out routine maintenance and basic repairs, and monitor major works as and when necessary
- Co-ordinate emergency repairs, i.e. defects which :
- put at risk the safety of buildings, their occupants or members of the public
- threaten the fabric of buildings if not attended to immediately, e.g. burst pipes
- compromise the security of premises, e.g. broken windows, damaged external doors
- prevent the use of premises, e.g. boiler failure in winter
- Ensuring that the Parish Centre lift is serviceable and clean and maintained as per the service contract in place
- Ensuring the efficient operation of the heating systems, including their programming and carrying out simple maintenance
- Setting up/putting away and moving furniture and equipment to meet user requirements
- Inspection and tidying of areas between use by groups, including vacuuming/spot cleaning as necessary to maintain high levels of cleanliness
- Setting up and packing down the computer and A/V provision ahead of sessions used by groups and, when required, providing support to group users in this respect
- Regular more-thorough cleaning of carpets, solid floor areas, surfaces and internal windows
- Inspection and cleaning of all toilets and kitchens to maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene
- Emptying and cleaning of waste bins, removal of other rubbish and putting out bins on refuse collection day
- Carrying out a weekly ‘deep clean’ of kitchens and appliances
- Inspecting and ensuring that all kitchen appliances are maintained and in good working order
- Cleaning and maintaining storage cupboards in good order
- Ordering and re-stocking of janitorial materials and replenishment of consumables in all toilets and kitchens
- Ensuring the safe storage of any flammable/toxic substances, including all cleaning products
- Checking general lighting, cleaning light shades/diffusers, replacing bulbs/tubes as necessary and ordering replacements
- ‘Deep cleaning’ of premises during periods of limited use, e.g. school holidays
- Maintaining appearance of facilities, including the cleaning of external notice boards and minor painting/touching up
- Maintaining grounds in the immediate vicinity of St Peter’s Church and Parish Centre, including shrubs, beds and tubs as well as car parks
- Ensuring that drains and manholes are clean and operational
- Liaising with and monitoring the standard of work of contractors who provide services
- Ensuring that any equipment connected to the electricity, gas or water services are left in a safe condition at the end of each day and during holiday periods
Other duties of cleaning and general site management that may be reasonably requested by the Parish Business Manager to meet the needs of St Peter’s Church and Parish Centre.
